P2 Science and Algenesis Partner to Develop Algae-Derived 100% Biobased Biodegradable Polyurethanes
P2 Science and Algenesis have announced a partnership to develop algae-derived chemicals and 100% biobased biodegradable polyurethanes. The collaboration combines P2 Science’s specialty chemical platform with Algenesis’s proprietary algae-based polymer technology to create sustainable alternatives to conventional petroleum-based polyurethanes.
The partnership aims to develop a new generation of high-performance, fully biobased and biodegradable polyurethane materials for applications across multiple industries. By leveraging algae as a renewable feedstock, the collaboration seeks to reduce reliance on fossil resources while delivering materials that meet the performance requirements of demanding applications.
Polyurethanes are widely used in coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers, foams, and specialty applications. Conventional polyurethanes are derived from petroleum-based polyols and isocyanates. The shift to algae-derived, fully biobased and biodegradable alternatives represents a significant advancement in sustainable materials science.
Both companies bring complementary expertise: P2 Science’s catalytic process technology for converting renewable feedstocks into specialty chemicals, and Algenesis’s platform for producing high-performance polymers from algae oils. Together, they aim to accelerate the commercialization of truly sustainable polyurethane solutions.
