Biopolymer Innovation Award 2026 opens submissions for breakthrough bio-based and biodegradable polymer innovations
The Biopolymer Innovation Award 2026 has opened its call for submissions, inviting companies, research institutes and start-ups to showcase breakthrough innovations in bio-based and biodegradable polymers. The award, presented annually at the Biopolymer Congress, highlights novel materials, processes and applications that advance the circular bioeconomy.
Categories span packaging, textiles, agriculture and medical applications, reflecting the broadening scope of biopolymer deployment across industrial sectors. Winners gain industry visibility and access to a network of investors and strategic partners actively scouting for scalable sustainable material solutions.
The award comes at a pivotal moment for the bioplastics industry. Global production capacities for bio-based plastics are projected to grow from approximately 2.2 million tonnes in 2023 to over 7.4 million tonnes by 2028, according to European Bioplastics market data. This expansion is driven by tightening regulatory frameworks — particularly the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) — and accelerating corporate sustainability commitments.
“The Biopolymer Innovation Award has become a benchmark for identifying technologies ready to move from lab to market,” said a spokesperson for the congress organizers. “We see submissions ranging from novel PHA and PLA formulations to entirely new polymer architectures derived from CO₂ or waste biomass. The common thread is demonstrable performance combined with environmental benefit.”
Previous editions have recognized innovations in marine-degradable packaging films, bio-based barrier coatings for paper packaging, and chemically recyclable polyester systems. The 2026 jury comprises experts from academia, industry and investment communities, evaluating entries on technical novelty, environmental impact, commercial viability and scalability.
Submissions close in advance of the Biopolymer Congress, where finalists present their innovations to an audience of brand owners, converters, material suppliers and policymakers. The congress serves as a primary networking platform for the European bioplastics value chain, combining technical sessions with dedicated matchmaking formats.
