Copersucar Launches BioRota: Brazil's Largest Biomethane-Powered Logistics Fleet

Biomethane Logistics Brazil Sugarcane Fleet CO₂ Reduction

Copersucar, one of the world’s largest sugar and ethanol traders, has launched BioRota — Brazil’s largest sustainable logistics fleet, powered by biomethane.

How It Works

More than 70 biomethane-powered trucks transport sugar from Copersucar-affiliated mills to the port of Santos. The biomethane comes from sugarcane residues (vinasse and filter cake) — produced at Cocal’s pioneering plants in western São Paulo. It’s genuine circular economy: waste from sugar production becomes fuel for the same supply chain.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves

Biomethane reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared to diesel. The BioRota fleet has already replaced roughly 5 million liters of diesel and avoided over 8,000 tons of CO₂. And it’s not just climate-friendly — it makes economic sense too.

Scalable

Copersucar emphasizes that the BioRota model is scalable. Companies across different industries with road logistics operations could replicate the approach. Cocal, the biomethane supplier, operates two large-scale plants and was a pioneer in biomethane from sugarcane in Brazil.
