Evonik Opens New Asia PAthletic Center for High-Performance Polyamides
Strategic Expansion in Asia
On April 29, 2026, Evonik officially inaugurated its new Asia PAthletic Center in Shanghai, a specialized innovation and testing hub designed to advance high-performance polyamide solutions. Aimed primarily at the sports equipment and consumer goods sectors, the facility positions the specialty chemicals company closer to major manufacturing partners and fast-growing consumer markets in the Asia-Pacific region.
High-Performance Bio-Based Polyamides
The PAthletic Center will focus heavily on the development and optimization of advanced polymers, including Evonik’s robust portfolio of bio-based polyamides. Materials such as VESTAMID® Terra—which is synthesized from renewable raw materials like castor bean oil to produce long-chain polyamides (PA610, PA1010, and PA1012)—are increasingly sought after by top-tier sporting goods brands.
These high-performance bioplastics deliver the exceptional durability, energy return, and lightweight properties required for specialized applications, such as athletic footwear midsoles, robust structural cleats, and durable wearable technology components. Crucially, they offer these advanced mechanical properties while significantly lowering the carbon footprint compared to traditional petroleum-derived plastics. The center is equipped with state-of-the-art testing equipment capable of simulating rigorous athletic use, ensuring that the biopolyamides meet the exact structural integrity standards demanded by elite athletes.
Accelerating Innovation and Time-to-Market
The new Shanghai-based center will enable Evonik to collaborate directly with regional footwear designers, injection molders, and equipment manufacturers. This hands-on, localized approach significantly reduces development cycles and fosters rapid co-innovation. By bridging the gap between advanced polymer science and commercial applications, Evonik is setting a new benchmark for how material suppliers can drive sustainable, high-performance product design. The PAthletic Center stands as a testament to the growing demand for localized supply chains and sustainable material engineering in the dynamic Asian sports industry.
