BlueAlp Selected as Pyrolysis Technology Partner for BioBTX Circular Aromatics Plant in Delfzijl
When two Dutch cleantech companies join forces to solve one of the chemical industry’s most persistent challenges, the result is more than a press release — it is a blueprint for how circular chemistry might actually work at scale. In April 2026, BioBTX and BlueAlp announced a technology partnership that will see BlueAlp’s continuous pyrolysis system installed at the PETRA Circular Chemicals Plant in Delfzijl, creating the world’s first integrated facility to turn mixed plastic waste directly into renewable benzene, toluene, and xylenes.
The logic of the partnership lies in complementarity. BioBTX has spent over a decade developing its Integrated Catalytic Cracking Process, a catalytic upgrading technology that converts pyrolysis vapors into high-purity aromatics. But ICCP needs a consistent, clean vapor feed — something that conventional batch pyrolysis struggles to deliver, especially when the input is the heterogeneous, contaminated mixed plastic waste that makes up the bulk of post-consumer streams. BlueAlp’s continuous rotary kiln pyrolysis technology, refined through multiple commercial-scale deployments including the 21-kilotonne-per-year Renasci facility in Oostende, Belgium, provides exactly that: a steady, controllable vapor stream tailored to downstream catalytic conversion.
The numbers tell the story of industrial ambition. The PETRA plant will process twenty kilotonnes of mixed plastic waste annually. BlueAlp’s pyrolysis unit, currently under fabrication at the company’s Eindhoven headquarters, will be delivered in modular sections starting in December 2026 for integration at the Delfzijl site. The system operates by gradually heating plastic waste in an oxygen-free environment, breaking polymer chains into a vapor phase that BioBTX’s ICCP unit then selectively upgrades into BTX — the same three molecules that today come almost exclusively from fossil naphtha reforming.
Ton Vries, CEO of BioBTX, emphasized the rigor behind the selection: “After an extensive evaluation process, we selected BlueAlp because of their continuous process, proven technology and TRL 9 maturity. By incorporating BlueAlp’s technology with BioBTX’s ICCP technology, we are creating a true best-of-both-worlds solution, one with the potential to fundamentally reshape the future of the circular chemical industry.” Valentijn de Neve, CEO of BlueAlp, echoed the sentiment, noting that the collaboration provides BlueAlp a more direct pathway to circular benzene, toluene, and xylenes — a market that has long sought renewable alternatives but lacked commercially viable production routes.
The partnership reflects a broader shift in chemical recycling strategy. Early efforts often pursued single-technology solutions — pyrolysis to naphtha, or gasification to syngas — that then required integration into existing petrochemical crackers. The BioBTX-BlueAlp model is different: a purpose-built, two-step system where each stage is optimized for the other, producing drop-in aromatics directly from waste. This integration reduces capital intensity, improves carbon efficiency, and sidesteps the quality constraints that have limited the acceptance of pyrolysis oil in conventional steam crackers.
For the Netherlands, the project reinforces the country’s position as a hub for circular chemistry innovation. The Chemical Park Delfzijl, developed by Groningen Seaports with provincial support, has attracted a cluster of complementary technologies — from mechanical recycling to renewable hydrogen — that share infrastructure, utilities, and a growing skilled workforce. The PETRA plant, with its thirty-five direct jobs and hundreds more in construction and supply chains, anchors this cluster’s move toward higher-value chemical production from waste.
The investors behind BioBTX — Invest-NL, Infinity Recycling, Covestro, NOM, and Carduso Capital — have backed this integrated approach with over eighty million euros in committed funding, supplemented by debt from Colesco Capital, FEAS, and the Province of Groningen, plus a DEI+ subsidy from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. BlueAlp’s shareholder base, including Borouge International, Shell, Rumali, Den Hartog, and Mourik, brings both strategic industrial alignment and deep project execution experience.
Construction of the pyrolysis modules in Eindhoven is already underway. By the time they arrive in Delfzijl in late 2026, the site preparation and ICCP unit foundations will be well advanced. Commissioning is targeted for mid-2028, at which point the combined system will demonstrate whether the long-promised vision of circular aromatics — identical in chemistry to their fossil counterparts, but born from waste — can meet the relentless demands of continuous commercial operation.
If it does, the implications extend far beyond a single plant in the northern Netherlands. The global aromatics market exceeds one hundred million tonnes per year. Every tonne produced from waste instead of naphtha represents avoided fossil extraction, reduced incineration, and a tangible step toward a chemical industry that no longer treats carbon as a one-way journey from well to waste. The BioBTX-BlueAlp partnership, forged in the pragmatic engineering culture of the Dutch process industry, may well be remembered as the moment that vision became viable.
