Global biosolutions giant Novonesis has officially expanded its manufacturing footprint in Southeast Asia by acquiring a specialized production facility in Thailand. The strategic acquisition is designed to rapidly scale the company’s output of bio-based solutions, specifically targeting the growing demand for enzymes and microbial technologies that are essential to the biochemical and bioplastics sectors in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

A Strategic Hub for Biomaterials

Thailand has firmly established itself as a premier global hub for bioplastics and bio-based manufacturing, driven by its abundant agricultural feedstocks such as sugarcane and cassava. By securing a localized facility, Novonesis aims to streamline its supply chain and provide regional bioplastic producers with crucial biological tools. These customized biosolutions are highly sought after for refining biomass feedstocks into polymer precursors—such as lactic acid for PLA (polylactic acid)—and for powering advanced enzymatic degradation processes in plastic recycling.

Upgrading Fermentation Capacity

The newly acquired plant will undergo immediate modernization to integrate Novonesis’ proprietary fermentation and precision biological processing technologies. Once fully operational under the Novonesis banner, the facility will significantly increase the company’s regional capacity to supply customized enzymes. Utilizing biological catalysis allows downstream polymer manufacturers to lower processing temperatures, drastically reduce energy consumption, and eliminate harsh petrochemical solvents from their production lines.

Meeting Surging Market Demand

Formed from the historic merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen, Novonesis is actively scaling its infrastructure to support the transition away from petroleum.
