ETB Global B.V. has officially confirmed plans to construct its first commercial-scale plant dedicated to the production of bio-based butadiene. The announcement marks a pivotal moment in the transition from fossil-fuel-derived elastomers to sustainable alternatives, targeting the heavy-industrial demands of the tire and rubber sectors.

Commercializing Bio-Butadiene

Following successful pilot phases and catalyst validation, ETB Global is scaling up its proprietary technology which converts bio-ethanol into polymer-grade butadiene. Butadiene is a critical raw material traditionally obtained as a byproduct of steam cracking naphtha for ethylene production. However, ETB’s process allows for “on-purpose” production using renewable feedstocks.

The new commercial facility utilizes a unique one-step catalytic process. By leveraging bio-ethanol, the company aims to sever the link between butadiene production and volatile fossil fuel markets, offering a drop-in solution that is chemically identical to its petrochemical counterpart but carries a significantly lower carbon footprint.

Bridging the Supply Gap

The timing of this commercial expansion addresses a looming structural challenge in the petrochemical industry. As ethylene producers increasingly shift toward lighter feedstocks like ethane—which yield minimal butadiene—the global supply of this essential monomer has faced tightening constraints.

ETB Global’s bio-based route provides a strategic buffer against these shortages. By utilizing ethanol, which is widely available from various agricultural and waste sources, the new plant ensures a stable supply chain for manufacturers dependent on butadiene for the production of Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS).

Decarbonizing the Value Chain

The commercial plant represents a major step forward for downstream industries, particularly automotive and consumer goods, which are under increasing regulatory pressure to reduce Scope 3 emissions. The integration of bio-butadiene allows tire manufacturers and plastic compounders to increase the renewable content of their products without compromising on performance or durability.
