Plantsea Raises £350k in Crowdfunding to Scale Seaweed-Based Polymer Film
Welsh biotechnology innovator Plantsea has successfully closed a significant crowdfunding round, raising £350,000 to accelerate the commercialization of its proprietary seaweed-based packaging solutions. Conducted via the Republic Europe platform, the raise signals strong investor confidence in marine-derived biopolymers as a viable alternative to traditional petrochemical films.
Capital for Commercial Scale-Up
The fresh injection of capital is earmarked for scaling Plantsea’s manufacturing capabilities. Moving from pilot-scale research and development to commercial production requires robust infrastructure, and this funding will allow the company to optimize its processing technology. The company aims to meet the growing demand from the personal care and food and beverage sectors, which are under increasing regulatory pressure to eliminate microplastic-generating materials.
By leveraging equity crowdfunding, Plantsea has tapped into a community of investors specifically focused on green technology and circular economy solutions, validating the market readiness of their seaweed-derived films.
Replacing Hidden Plastics
Plantsea’s core technology focuses on utilizing sustainably sourced seaweed to create water-soluble and biodegradable films. A primary target for this technology is the replacement of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA/PVOH), a synthetic water-soluble polymer commonly used in laundry and dishwasher pods. While PVA dissolves in water, recent studies suggest it does not fully biodegrade in natural wastewater environments, often persisting as a dissolved synthetic polymer.
Plantsea’s alternative offers a bio-benign solution. Their material is derived from naturally abundant marine biomass, requiring no fresh water, arable land, or fertilizers to grow. The resulting film provides the necessary mechanical strength and barrier properties for packaging applications but breaks down completely into harmless natural byproducts in marine, terrestrial, and home composting environments.
Next Steps for Plantsea
With the £350,000 secured, Plantsea is set to expand its technical team and refine its supply chain logistics to ensure a steady intake of raw seaweed biomass. The company is reportedly entering advanced testing phases with several FMCG partners looking to integrate the seaweed film into their product lines before the end of the year.
