Celanese Corporation, a global chemical and specialty materials company, has officially inaugurated its expanded Automotive Technology Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The strategic expansion aims to bolster the company’s capabilities in developing sustainable engineered materials and accelerating innovation for the electric vehicle (EV) market.

Accelerating Sustainable Material Adoption

The expanded facility now houses advanced injection molding capabilities and upgraded analytical laboratories designed specifically to validate bio-based and recycled-content formulations. A primary focus of the center will be the application development of Celanese’s ECO-B portfolio, which utilizes mass-balance certified bio-based feedstocks to reduce the carbon footprint of essential polymers like Hostaform POM and Celanex PBT.

By enhancing its testing infrastructure, Celanese can now perform rigorous on-site validation to ensure that sustainable thermoplastic alternatives meet the exacting mechanical and thermal standards required by North American automotive OEMs. The center allows engineers to test how bio-circular materials perform under stress, ensuring that lowering carbon intensity does not compromise the durability required for safety-critical components.

Focus on Electrification and Light-weighting

Located in the heart of the American automotive industry, the Auburn Hills center is positioned to address the specific challenges of vehicle electrification. The expansion includes new resources for Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) and mold flow analysis, essential for replacing heavy metal components with lightweight engineering plastics.

The facility will support the rapid prototyping of complex parts such as high-voltage battery components, electrical connectors, and thermal management systems. By integrating material science with application design, Celanese aims to help manufacturers optimize EV range through weight reduction while simultaneously integrating circular materials into the automotive supply chain.
