Chugai Develops Multilayer Blister Pack Using Biomass Plastics

Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. has announced a significant advancement in sustainable healthcare logistics with the development of a multilayer blister pack utilizing biomass plastics. This innovation marks a pivotal step in reducing the pharmaceutical industry’s reliance on fossil-fuel-derived packaging materials while maintaining strict quality assurance standards.

Engineering Sustainable Barriers

The newly developed packaging is a Press-Through Package (PTP) sheet, the most common form of blister packaging used for tablet and capsule delivery in Japan and globally. Historically, PTP sheets have relied heavily on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or other petroleum-based polymers to provide the necessary rigidity and moisture barrier required to protect active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Chugai’s engineering team has successfully integrated biomass-derived plastics into a multilayer structure. By utilizing plant-derived resources for specific layers of the sheet, the company aims to significantly lower the carbon footprint associated with the manufacturing and disposal of pharmaceutical packaging. The multilayer design is critical, as it allows the inclusion of sustainable materials without compromising the high-barrier properties essential for drug stability and shelf-life preservation.

Strategic Environmental Goals

This development aligns with Chugai’s broader “Mid-Term Business Plan,” which emphasizes environmental stewardship and the reduction of Scope 3 emissions. The company views the transition to biomass plastics as a key component of its strategy to realize a circular economy within the medical sector.

By adopting biomass plastics, Chugai is addressing the “upstream” emissions in their supply chain. The use of renewable feedstock effectively acts as a carbon offset during the material’s lifecycle, contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional petrochemical plastics.
