In a significant boost for the United Kingdom’s circular bioeconomy, Precision Plants Ltd has announced the receipt of a £912,000 grant aimed at accelerating the commercialization of industrial hemp-based bioplastics. The funding marks a critical step in the company’s mission to utilize non-food crops as a primary feedstock for high-performance polymer production.

Advancing Sustainable Feedstocks

The injection of capital will enable Precision Plants to scale its proprietary technology, which processes industrial hemp into viable bioplastic precursors. Unlike traditional bioplastics that often rely on food crops such as corn or sugarcane, industrial hemp offers a robust alternative that does not compete with the food supply chain. The grant is expected to fund the expansion of research and development facilities and the deployment of pilot-scale processing units designed to refine the extraction of cellulose and hemicellulose from hemp fibers and shiv.
