Asahi Kasei to unveil PFAS-free polyamide and CFRP recycling technology at K 2025

Asahi Kasei Polyamide PFAS-Free CFRP Recycling

As global regulatory pressures mount against “forever chemicals” and the demand for circular material economies intensifies, Japanese materials giant Asahi Kasei is preparing to make a significant splash at the K 2025 trade fair in Düsseldorf. The company has announced it will officially unveil its next-generation PFAS-free polyamide compounds alongside a breakthrough recycling technology for carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP).

Pioneering PFAS-Free Polyamides

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have historically been utilized in the plastics industry as processing aids, flame retardants, and friction modifiers. However, impending global restrictions are forcing manufacturers to seek safer alternatives. Asahi Kasei’s newly developed polyamide grades offer a solution that completely eliminates PFAS without compromising essential material properties. Designed for demanding applications in the automotive and electronics sectors, these engineered polyamides maintain high thermal stability, mechanical strength, and excellent flowability, proving that high performance and environmental safety can seamlessly coexist.

Advancing CFRP Circularity

In addition to regulatory-compliant polyamides, Asahi Kasei will showcase an advanced technology aimed at closing the loop on carbon composites. Traditionally, CFRPs are notoriously difficult to recycle due to the complex bonding between the carbon fibers and the surrounding polymer matrix. Asahi Kasei’s innovative recycling process effectively separates and reclaims high-quality carbon fibers from end-of-life components and manufacturing scrap. These recovered fibers can then be reintegrated into new thermoplastic compounds, dramatically reducing the high energy consumption and carbon footprint associated with manufacturing virgin carbon fiber.

Industry Impact

The dual introduction of PFAS-free polyamides and CFRP recycling capabilities highlights Asahi Kasei’s strategic commitment to environmental stewardship. By providing industries with advanced materials that anticipate future regulatory frameworks and promote circular product lifecycles, the company is positioning itself as a vital partner for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) striving to meet aggressive decarbonization targets.
