Strategic Capital for PLA Expansion

Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd (BCML) has successfully raised ₹450 crore to accelerate its ambitious foray into the bioplastics sector. As one of India’s leading sugar manufacturers, the company is leveraging its robust agricultural supply chain to produce Polylactic Acid (PLA), a bio-based and industrially compostable alternative to conventional petrochemical plastics.

The newly secured capital will primarily fund the establishment and scaling of a highly integrated PLA manufacturing facility. By utilizing sugarcane as a primary renewable feedstock, BCML aims to create a reliable domestic supply of biodegradable polymers, catering to the growing regulatory and consumer demand for alternative packaging and consumer goods.

Enhancing Circularity with Lactogypsum

A critical component of this broad expansion is a dedicated ₹160 crore investment into a state-of-the-art lactogypsum processing plant. The production of lactic acid—the direct chemical precursor required to polymerize PLA—generates significant quantities of lactogypsum as a byproduct during the fermentation and neutralization phases.

Instead of treating this material as industrial waste, BCML’s new processing facility will refine the lactogypsum for commercial secondary applications, significantly improving the overall circularity and environmental footprint of their bioplastic operations. This strategic byproduct management underscores the technical maturity and efficiency of the company’s biopolymer strategy.

Driving India’s Bioplastic Sector

This aggressive investment signals a major shift in India’s materials market. Historically reliant on imported biopolymers to meet local demand, India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities are receiving a critical boost through BCML’s initiative. The integrated production model—starting from raw sugarcane extraction to lactic acid fermentation and finally PLA polymerization—positions Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd as a formidable new player in the global bioplastic industry.

By closing the loop on agricultural feedstocks and effectively managing industrial byproducts, the company is setting a new benchmark for bio-based manufacturing in South Asia.
