PTT MCC Biochem and Nordic Bioproducts Group Unite in Strategic Partnership for Coffee Capsules and Single-Use Products
PTT MCC Biochem Co., Ltd. (PTTMCC), a leading producer of bio-based polybutylene succinate (BioPBS™), and Nordic Bioproducts Group (NBG), a cellulosic fibers producer, have announced a landmark collaboration formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This strategic partnership signifies a leap forward in advancing bioplastic technology.
Driven by a shared vision for sustainability, PTTMCC and NBG aim to revolutionize the performance and compostability of bioplastics. By harnessing Nordic Bioproducts Group’s AaltoCell™ Technology, the collaboration will explore integrating NBG’s cellulosic fibers with BioPBS™, aiming to elevate the quality and eco-friendliness of bioplastic solutions.
The focus is on developing next-generation bioplastics that not only deliver superior performance but also maintain home compostability and biodegradability. Through intensive research and development, the partnership aims to enhance heat resistance and home compostable solutions for single-use products such as coffee capsules, cutlery, and containers, catering to expanding market demands.
With the global coffee capsule market projected to reach USD 11.9 billion by 2032, there is a pressing need for sustainable alternatives. The rise of compostable coffee capsules reflects growing consumer awareness of environmental impact, particularly concerning the disposal of traditional aluminum capsules. This trend underscores the importance of innovative solutions that mitigate waste and promote circular economy practices.
Incorporating BioPBS and NBG’s activated cellulose fibers, the product meets strict food container safety regulations while maintaining uncompromising quality and purity. Additionally, it offers the perfect solution for the growing industry by achieving high bio-based content, enabling penetration into new markets where petroleum-based plastic products have dominated.
PTTMCC is a strategic joint venture company between PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC) and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC), established in March 2011 to produce BioPBS™. The company is committed to driving the green industry forward on a global scale, determined to give the world a sustainable future through easily adopted bio-chemical innovations.
Together, PTT MCC Biochem and Nordic Bioproducts Group are poised to drive positive change in the bioplastics landscape, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
