YXY® Technology
Technology
Quick Overview
Avantium's proprietary catalytic process for converting plant-based sugars into FDCA (2,5-furandicarboxylic acid) — the key building block for PEF (polyethylene furanoate).
Overview
YXY® Technology is Avantium’s patented catalytic process for producing FDCA (2,5-furandicarboxylic acid) from plant-based sugars. FDCA is the key monomer building block for PEF (polyethylene furanoate) — Avantium’s flagship biopolymer marketed under the releaf® brand.
The technology name derives from the chemical transformation: Xylose → (Y) → FDCA (where Y represents the catalytic conversion steps).
Process Chemistry
Feedstock
- Primary: Fructose from starch crops (corn, wheat, potatoes)
- Future: 2nd-generation sugars from lignocellulosic biomass (agricultural residues, forestry waste)
- Sustainability: Renewable, non-food competing feedstocks under development
Reaction Steps
| Step | Transformation | Key Innovation |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Dehydration | Fructose → HMF (hydroxymethylfurfural) | Selective acid catalysis |
| 2. Oxidation | HMF → FDCA | Catalytic oxidation with high selectivity |
| 3. Purification | Crude FDCA → Polymer-grade FDCA | Proprietary separation technology |
YXY® Catalytic System
- Proprietary catalyst formulations for both dehydration and oxidation steps
- High selectivity to FDCA (>90% yield from fructose)
- Mild conditions compared to traditional petrochemical routes
- Continuous process design for commercial scale
Commercial Development
