Bio-based

Quick Overview

Alias for biobased-content — materials derived wholly or partly from biomass rather than fossil resources. See [biobased-content](/glossary/biobased-content/).

Bio-based

Bio-based (also written biobased) refers to materials, chemicals, or products that are wholly or partly derived from biomass — renewable biological resources such as plants, agricultural residues, forestry by-products, algae, or organic waste — rather than from fossil resources (petroleum, natural gas, coal).

This is an alias entry. For the full definition, standards, certification schemes, and examples, see Biobased Content.

Key Points

  • Origin: Biomass carbon (¹⁴C detectable via ASTM D6866 / EN 16640)
  • Not the same as biodegradable — bio-based ≠ biodegradable
  • Drop-in examples: bio-PE, bio-PP, bio-PET (chemically identical to fossil counterparts)
  • Novel polymers: PLA, PHA, PEF, bio-PA, bio-PUR
  • Certification: USDA BioPreferred, TÜV OK biobased, DIN CERTCO, ISCC PLUS
