Verdofoam is a Netherlands-based biotech company producing 100% bio-based foam made from PLA (polylactic acid). Verdofoam provides a sustainable and fully renewable alternative to traditional EPS foam for packaging, insulation, and industrial applications.
Founded by CEO Hans-Erik Ouwehand, Verdofoam has developed a breakthrough process to create bio-based foam from PLA using innovative additive technology in partnership with Nexam Chemical. This collaboration has successfully overcome the technical challenges of expanding bio-based plastics like PLA, which previously required fossil-based polystyrene.
The company’s bio-based foam offers the same shock-absorbing properties as traditional EPS (expanded polystyrene) but with a significantly lower carbon footprint. Key applications include e-commerce packaging, protective packaging, and insulation materials. The technology enables the replacement of fossil-based polystyrene foam used in e-commerce packaging with a fully renewable, bio-based alternative.
Verdofoam’s partnership with Nexam Chemical leverages Nexam’s unique additive technology to enhance PLA’s foamability, making it possible to produce lightweight bio-based foam at commercial scale. This breakthrough opens up an entirely new market for bio-based foam applications in packaging and insulation.
