Overview

ReLeaf is the commercial brand for Avantium’s PEF (polyethylene furanoate) technology — a breakthrough 100% plant-based, recyclable polyester that serves as a sustainable alternative to conventional PET. Developed by Avantium N.V. using their proprietary YXY® Technology, ReLeaf represents a new generation of bio-based polymers that are both high-performing and environmentally responsible.

PEF is produced from FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), which Avantium manufactures from plant-based sugars through its catalytic YXY® process. The resulting polymer offers superior performance characteristics compared to PET while being completely fossil-free and compatible with existing recycling infrastructure.

Core Technology: YXY® Process

FDCA Production

Avantium’s patented YXY® Technology converts plant-based fructose into FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), the key building block for PEF:

Process Steps:

  1. Feedstock: Plant-based sugars (fructose from starch crops)
  2. Dehydration: Catalytic conversion to HMF (hydroxymethylfurfural)
  3. Oxidation: Selective oxidation to FDCA
  4. Purification: High-purity FDCA suitable for polymerization
  5. Polymerization: FDCA + monoethylene glycol (MEG) → PEF

PEF Polymer Properties

Superior Barrier Performance:

  • 10× better oxygen barrier than PET
  • 2× better CO₂ barrier than PET
  • Excellent water vapor barrier
  • Enables extended shelf life for sensitive products

Mechanical Advantages:

  • Higher tensile strength than PET
  • Improved thermal stability
  • Better processability on existing PET equipment
  • Allows lightweighting (thinner walls, less material)

Sustainability Profile:

  • 100% bio-based (when using bio-based MEG)
  • Fully recyclable in existing PET recycling streams
  • Lower carbon footprint vs. fossil-based PET
  • No food contact migration issues
