Overview

Evonik Industries AG is one of the world’s leading specialty chemicals companies, headquartered in Essen, Germany. The company operates in more than 100 countries and employs approximately 33,000 people. Evonik’s business spans diverse markets including specialty additives, nutrition & care, smart materials, performance materials, and catalysts.

Under its Next Generation Evonik strategy, the company is focusing on three strategic pillars: circular solutions, climate neutrality, and life sciences — positioning itself as a key enabler of the transition to a sustainable chemical industry.

Catalysts Segment: A Core Competency

Evonik’s Catalysts division is a global leader in process catalysts, adsorbents, and process technology for:

  • Refining: FCC catalysts, hydrotreating catalysts, adsorbents
  • Petrochemicals: Steam cracking catalysts, dehydrogenation, oligomerization
  • Emissions Control: Automotive and stationary catalysts
  • Chemical Recycling: Pyrolysis oil purification (Purocel™ series)

The division leverages decades of expertise in zeolite chemistry, metal catalysis, and adsorption science to solve complex feedstock upgrading challenges.

The Purocel™ Series: Enabling Chemical Recycling at Scale

Launched in June 2026, the Purocel™ series represents Evonik’s most significant entry into the chemical recycling value chain. The product line comprises:

  • Purocel 505/510/515: Specialized adsorbents for chloride, metal, and silicon/phosphorus removal
  • Purocel HTC-1/2/3: Hydrotreating catalysts for hydrodechlorination, HDN/HDS, and guard duties

These products are designed as an integrated purification train that converts heterogeneous pyrolysis oil from mixed plastic waste into steam-cracker-ready feedstock meeting stringent specifications (<1 ppm Cl, <0.5 ppm metals, <50 ppm N).

Broader Circular Economy Portfolio

Beyond Purocel™, Evonik offers complementary solutions for circularity:

Product LineApplication
VESTENAMER®Process additive for devulcanization and mechanical recycling of rubbers/polymers
TEGO® CycleAdditives enabling recyclability of coatings, inks, and adhesives
DEGACRYL®Recyclable adhesive systems for packaging
Purocel™Pyrolysis oil purification for chemical recycling

Market Position and Strategy

Evonik is uniquely positioned at the intersection of refining expertise and specialty chemical innovation. As steam cracker operators (BASF, Dow, SABIC, TotalEnergies, LyondellBasell, etc.) seek to qualify pyrolysis oil as circular feedstock, Evonik’s purification technology addresses the critical quality gap.

The company’s catalysts and adsorbents are already deployed in refineries and petrochemical plants worldwide, providing a trusted installed base and deep application knowledge for the emerging chemical recycling market.
